My ulcer is in pain ~ we all brought our PJ's to work ~ I had dozens of voice mails from constituents and reporters ~ it's chaotic ~ yup, it must be Tuesday in Oakland.
With only two more City Council meetings this year, tonight's Council meeting promises to be a mind-numbing marathon session of legislation. The Councilmembers began Closed Session at 1 pm; at 4 pm we begin a Special Meeting [pdf] on Transportation and Street Repavement Priorities; then the regular Council meeting begins at 6 pm [pdf]. The meeting will start out on a good note ~ I wrote the Resolution saluting baseball great Joe Morgan [pdf] so that ceremonial item will be fun. But it's all downhill from there ~ 31 items on the Consent Calendar, a controversial item on for Public Hearing, then 11 items on the non-consent calendar, including the continuing debate over the Smoking Ordinance, a Measure Y update regarding the City's goal of 803 police officers, and some major decisions to be made about land use development strategies at the former Army Base.
I predict that by 9 pm we'll all be tired, hungry, cranky, and mad that we'll miss Dancing With The Stars and The Daily Show. As luck would have it, by 9 pm, when everyone is exhausted, and has already hit the 12-hour mark of their day, I will be preparing to present the Bubble Ordinance (Access to Reproductive Health Care Facilities) again, for the First Reading by the full Council. Remember the Bubble Ordinance passed unanimously out of Committee on October 23 ~ this Ordinance should be a no-brainer, but 25 speakers (at 1-2 minutes each) have already signed up on-line; so, the debate will likely take us to the midnight mark ~ another typical 15-hour Tuesday for most of us, even as many of us have 9 and 10 am meetings tomorrow(!)
If you are absolutely bored tonight, or if somehow you have an interest in watching how local government works, you can watch the meeting on LIVE STREAMING on the City's website. It's a bad hair day for me, so that enough should make you want to watch! ~ ;-)
Finally, for the sugar rush that gave me the energy to spit out this post in one quick sitting, I must give special thanks to Powderface ~ this cute cafe with the sweetest staff at the Fruitvale Transit Village, right off the BART station. I happily discovered that when you order "a beignet for here please," they actually give you a plate of THREE(!) And, for the single ladies, you should know the Oakland Fire Department likes this place too: ~ ;-)
