Okay... long time listener, first time caller...

Mari hit the nail on the head here... And she did it using a word that is both overused and misunderstood. The word is so much of what she lives and is about (see e.g., Once more with feeling). The word is "passion."

If the commercialization of Valentine's Day is getting you sick... just when you thought that you had recovered from Christmas (damn, if I don't hate the plastic and the music)... Then make Valentine's Day what you think it should be: In this case passion. Do what you do with passion. Say thank you to the barista... but really mean it, and damn if you shouldn't be using her/his name every time you are in there. If you are giving a meeting, then pitch that f-ing marketing plan with every ounce of your commercial being. And if you are working on a big, hard project, then pour all of yourself into it today... Hey, maybe you might like it.

... Also, it is interesting to note the meaning of the word that everyone uses on this day (compliments of dictionary.com):

love

  1. A deep, tender, ineffable feeling of affection and solicitude toward a person, such as that arising from kinship, recognition of attractive qualities, or a sense of underlying oneness.

  2. A feeling of intense desire and attraction toward a person with whom one is disposed to make a pair; the emotion of sex and romance.

... You don't have to be giving chocolates and flowers... or even be kissing or making love to look at a person who means so much to you in your life and remember the "sense of underlying oneness" or that "feeling of intense desire and attraction toward a person with whom [you are] disposed to [be] a pair" with... so do with your drinking buddy, your mother, your best friend, your postman (see post). You don't need to buy into other people's view of love... :) Just look it up. But do whatever needs to be done to let that person know that you feel that oneness... and for the love of all things holy, do it with passion.

it's too superficial anyway.
